Shape and Bake Preztels

Ingredients:

   

1 pkg.

   

quick rise yeast

   

1 tsp.

   

sugar

   

1 1/2 cups

   

warm water (105-115 degrees)

   

2 1/2 cups

   

100% whole grain Wheat Chex cereal, crushed

   

1 tsp.

   

salt

   

2 1/4 - 2 1/2 cups

   

bread flour, divided

   

1 large

   

egg

   

1 tbsp.

   

water

   

Sesame seeds

   

(or poppy seeds) optional

Directions: Measure cereal, place in plastic bag, seal and finely crush with rolling pin.

In large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in water. Stir in cereal, salt and 1 cup flour. Beat 2 minutes on medium speed. Add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead 7 minutes by hand or with dough hook. Cover; let rise 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease or line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Divide dough into 12 equal pieces. Form each piece into a smooth 20-inch rope, thick in the middle and thin on both ends.

Shape into a pretzel by making a circle, twisting ends together and pressing ends onto opposite side of circle. Place on baking sheet, forming a heart shape. Cover, let rise 15 minutes.

Beat egg and water together; brush on pretzels. If desired, sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds.

Bake 18-20 minutes or until golden. Makes 12 pretzels.
